Ingredients:
2 lbs of potatoes
Butter
Milk
2 lbs of ground beef
1/2 large onion
2 cans of cream of corn
1 can of whole corn
Paprika
Fresh Parmesan
Salt & Pepper
Can of pickled beets

Directions:Preheat oven to 400 F
Peel and boil potatoes. Once cooked, mash and add butter and milk.
Brown ground beef with onions in a skillet. Once cooked, add to a baking dish. In a bowl, mix 2 cans cream of corn with 1 can of whole kernel corn. Add the corn mixture to the baking dish on top of the browned ground beef. Add potatoes on top of the corn. Season with Paprika and Parmesan.

This can be served with Beets. It gives that extra punch to “Beet” Sara.
Sara: Just because it “can” doesn’t mean it should. haha :D

Cost Break Down:
Ground beef: $7.50
Potatoes: $2
Cream of Corn and Whole Corn Kernel: $2.64
Can of Beets:$0.52
Fresh Parmesan: $1.00
Onion: $0.30
Total: $13.96

Gabe: We had leftovers for another meal.
Sara: That’s a half truth. haha
pig
Gabe: So the break down is $1.39 per serving. I dirtied a lot less pots and pans than Sara. My meal was much simpler and friendlier to the environment.
Sara: Huh?
Gabe: I cleaned as I cooked, leaving only the plates from dinner for clean up.
Sara: Which I cleaned because I’m nice like that.
Gabe: Zach, Ally and Miranda gave it a thumbs up. Miranda ate all of her plate and them some. Zach ate all of his plate. Ally, on the other hand, didn’t finish her plate, but she had a larger portion than the other two. No one liked the beets, so I ended up eating all them.

We ate at 5PM. One of the constraints on Sunday is to get the kids ready for bed at 8PM with baths taken. My goal was to cook something simple, so that I could spend some quality time with Sara tonight once the kids went to bed. Mission accomplished! I even had a chance to watch a little football with her!

Sara: Whoa. Back up. Let’s start from the very beginning. Anyone else wondering WHY we’re having this meal? 4 days ago Gabe pulled ground beef from the freezer. The day after popping it into the fridge to thaw, it was still frozen. It sat there for 4 days and he wanted to use it up and that’s why he planned to make this recipe. The problem is that I wouldn’t eat ground beef that’s been thawing in the fridge for 4 days. In fact, I wouldn’t let him cook it and give it to our dog. For some reason, I’m not a big fan of vomiting and diarrhea. And while I’m disclosing so much personal information, I’ll add that I don’t care for football. lol At any rate, then he decides to get a fresh package of ground beef later when he’s out. Awww, he cares.

So, he starts his potatoes on the stove and walks away. A LONG time passes and I am watching these potatoes in the pan with the water bubbling away each time I make a pass through the kitchen. I took pity after 1.5 hours and turned off the stove and drained them. At the 2 hour point, he goes to the kitchen and exclaims “Hey You shut off my potatoes.” Uhhh yeahhh. I did.

Once mashed, he was heading out with Ally, so she could get a haircut. As he’s about to leave, he asks me to throw away the ground beef in the fridge. (I bet it could crawl to the trash on its own) I say surrrrre. Ask me if I thought 10 years ago that I’d be eating Chinese pie and touching stink meat? Thankfully, he decides he’ll toss it. Hero or sucker? You be the judge. He reaches in and leaves a disgusting blood trail from fridge to sink. ewwww I cleaned it. I’m nice like that.

He comes home about an hour later. He empties out his grocery bags and one of the sundries was a can of beets. I think my words were WTH???

After dinner, he starts to tell me this story about why they call it Chinese Pie. Cultural knowledge is a good thing.

Not for nothing, but that was some expensive ground beef! I thought shepherd’s pie was supposed to be cheap! A special thanks to Gabe for the brand name corn. I feel soooo worth it. :D All the kids like this and that’s a good thing.

I found your blog via Google while searching for chinese cooking repipe and your post regarding Chinese Pie (pâté chinois) looks very interesting to me. I could not believe the amount of quality material on this site. The site is extremely eyecatching and pulls the reader straight it, the articles are great quality and are very professionally written. I have seen too many of these sites where it looks like they pay an 8 year old to do the writing - Not this one. Your site is easily the best that I have seen in a long while.
